CollectionAbout the collectionWhat is the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection

The Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection (CHNC) currently includes 553+ newspaper titles published in Colorado from 1859 to 1923 and beyond (with publisher permission, we can digitize through present day). Newspapers come from throughout the state, and the languages represented in the collection include English, German, Japanese, Servian, Slavic, Spanish, and Swedish. The CHNC provides access to over 2,007,502 digitized pages from these newspapers.

Digitization of additional newspapers continues through a local fund-raising model with contributions made by local libraries, museums, and other organizations. Newspapers are digitized from microfilm copies owned by History Colorado, or directly from paper copies themselves. The CHNC uses Veridian Software as the database platform, which makes use of METS/ALTO as its HTML Standard. This is the standard that is maintained by the Library of Congress and is used in their National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).
